Stargate vs Across for USDC Bridging Which Costs Less and Why

Choosing the wrong bridge can cost you more than just a fee. The total cost of a USDC transfer includes source chain gas, the bridge fee, destination gas, and slippage. Stargate and Across handle these components very differently. Which one wins depends almost entirely on how much you are moving.

Stargate uses a Delta algorithm to balance pools across chains. This algorithm tries to keep pools aligned, and when one pool is low on USDC, the bridge fee rises sharply to discourage transfers in that direction. Across uses relayers who compete to fulfill your transfer. That competition tends to keep fees tight for most users.

The DefiLlama bridges dashboard and Socket aggregator quotes show these patterns clearly. This analysis is based on data gathered as of August 31, 2026. No on-chain pair for "basedbratt" was found on that date.

Small transfers under $1,000

For amounts under $1,000, Across is usually cheaper. The reason is destination gas. Stargate requires you to pay destination gas on the source chain as part of the bridge fee; Across covers destination gas from the relayer's side. For small transfers, that fixed gas cost is a larger proportion of the total, and Across absorbs it.

Stargate's Delta algorithm also adds a base fee per transfer that does not scale linearly with amount. For $100, the base fee is a noticeable percentage. Across relayers bid on the whole transfer, so small amounts attract less relayer interest but the competition still keeps the fee modest.

Expect Across to cost roughly 30-50% less on this size range. Slippage is minimal for both because stablecoin pools are deep on major chains.

Medium transfers $1,000 to $50,000

This is the competitive zone. Stargate's Delta algorithm works well here because the base fee becomes a smaller fraction of the total, and Across relayers also compete aggressively for these amounts. The difference narrows significantly.

Socket aggregator quotes often show them within 0.05% of each other for medium transfers between Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Optimism. The deciding factor becomes source chain gas. If you are on a cheap L2, Stargate's extra destination gas prepayment may still tilt the scale toward Across; if source gas is expensive, Across's relayer model avoids that cost.

For medium transfers between Ethereum mainnet and Arbitrum, the difference is often negligible. Both bridges charge roughly 0.04-0.06% in total fees at this size. Check the live quotes before sending.

Large transfers over $50,000

Stargate shines here. The Delta algorithm becomes less punitive as pool balances rebalance across large amounts. More importantly, Stargate uses a liquidity pool model that accommodates large transfers without significant price impact. Across relies on relayers committing capital. For a $200,000 transfer, a relayer must lock up that capital for the settlement period, and that cost gets passed to you.

At these sizes, Stargate can be 0.1-0.2% cheaper than Across. Slippage also matters: Stargate's pools are deeper for USDC, so price impact is lower. Across relayers are less likely to fill very large transfers at tight spreads. You may see longer wait times or higher quotes.

Decision framework

One caveat. The Delta algorithm can spike Stargate fees when a pool is imbalanced. If Stargate quotes more than 0.3% for a medium transfer, switch to Across immediately. That imbalance means the algorithm is working against you.

Neither bridge is universally cheaper. The cost profile shifts with transfer size, chain pair, and pool state. Measure the total cost, not just the fee. That is the only honest comparison.
